The Windows XP firewall is only one-directional; it can block incoming threats, but not outgoing. So if malware gets past the XP firewall and into your system, it is free to send out anything it wants to and Windows won't even try to stop it.

The Vista firewall is somewhat better in that it is at least bi-directional, but it isn't as good as even a mediocre third party firewall.

OH ABSOLUTELY THATS WHAT I HAVE DONE ...GOT RID OF WINDOWS FIREWALL FIRST DAY I BOUGHT COMP... I HAVE ZONEALRM PRO WORKS GREAT ... INBOUND/OUTBOUND PROTECTION IS WHAT U WANT AND NEED|||Well it does give you full control over what applications can connect to the internet in real time, but let's not exagerate. It won't protect you from any malware unless you install aditional software for it... For a home user i'd say windows firewall is everything you'll ever need if you never had problems with hackers... If a hacker really wants to enter you rcomputer without you knowing it he will no matter what firewall you'll be installing.|||Yes yes yes, and yet again...yes.
