Yellow is from the Middle English "yelou", which was from the Old English "geolu", which was from the German "gelb," which was from the Latin "helvus" (whew)! Green is from the German word "grun." Blue is from the French "bleu" as well as the Old High German "blao." Purple is from the Latin "purpura," which was the name of a type of shell fish that was the source of purple dye.
