When I try to run it in IE, I get an error message. It says the first line has a syntax error. There is not error. Even other functioning code will not run. What am I doing wrong?

Ok have you tried it in Firefox? Also try installing the Firebug addon it will help debug your JavaScript.
While you may think there is no error there is an error somewhere. IE's JavaScript error reporting is sometimes flaky which is why I recommended trying Firefox and Firebug to test it. A syntax error can throw everything off and cause other working code to not run.
If you still think that there is no error try calling MS and tell them their browser is not working right.|||Because IE is an inferior browser... ;)
