I bought a laptop at compUSA in June with preinstalled windows Vista Premium Home Edition. Since I encountered problems with wireless networks, I had to eventually reinstall Vista with the dvd I have received from compUSA together with my laptop. I entered the product key given on the back of my laptop and now I get the request to activate my windows. I tried doing it via phone but that failed, however, my windows copy is genuine:

And btw i copied and pasted this from another website, forums but i have the exact same problem.

And I dont know what to do, can anyone direct instructions on what to do without saying contact microsoft support?

You cannot reinstall windows vista just putting the dvd given by compusa. That might be a recovery dvd. Contact compusa for any further instructions on how to reinstall vista.

If you were given a recovery cd with the laptop, and it came with Vista, and you reinstalled it...

The issue is that it wont activate because it still thinks you have it installed on another computer. Even though its the same computer...

You need to call the # on the activation thing, speak with one of the microsoft activation representatives..

Simply tell them, you have it installed on 1 computer only, and that you had to reinstall because of some issues.

They should allow you, or give you a code that will activate it.
