Unmountable_Boot_Volume (STOP: 0x000000ED)?
(Dell Dimension 4700 Desktop) Started when opened up Live Earth, and froze up. Restarted, and the blue screen of death with this stop error came up. I cannot boot up into safe mode or any other mode. Have Windows XP Pro SP2. I have a XP Pro SP1 reinstallation disk. Will this work for the chkdsk /r repair? Is that the best way to fix it? How will it affect the current version of Windows? Can I use this and still have all data saved on the hard drive? The files on it are critical, and I CANNOT lose them. If there is anyway to fix this without losing the data, please let me know ASAP! Thank you for all of your help. I have checked the Microsoft support page, but that doesn't really help me. What does it mean with the 40-pin and 80-pin cables? Help!!!
Unmountable_Boot_Volume (STOP: 0x000000ED)?microsoft windows xpOk - I work in support for Dell. Couple of things to try...
First run the diagnostics on the drive. Tap F12 at the dell screen and choose "HDD Diagnostics." If you get an error code, specifically error code 7, that indicates a read failure. With unmountable boot volume, most likely you've lost the OS and you may not even be able to format the drive in the future to reinstall windows.
Now with that being said, you can try chkdsk but most likely 99% won't fix it. If you need to get the data off, you need to get an SP2 disk and run a repair of windows, do not format the drive, just do a parallel install of windows, (search parallel install on google for directions, or windowsreinstall.com)
