lost files etc. Microsoft support will end for service pack 1 in October and, given the number of security flaws they seem to discover on a weekly basis, I probably should install SP2. However, Microsoft's installation instructions talks about backing up files and programs as if they expect SP2 to cause serious problems. Do I need to worry about installing SP2? Thank you.

You should backup before installing SP2 just in case, and you should backup regularly anyway, but you're unlikely to have problems from SP2, and it's MUCH more secure. You still need AV and AS protection, however, and the XP SP2 firewall is only one-way.

i don't think you need to worry at all... i have it installed and it is working pretty fine....|||install sp2 then download microsoft internet explorer 7 for free and install that
