I don't really have an answer for that, I just know that it's a big pain in the twat. I disabled it for that and the other reason, it kept popping up in my face when I didn't want it to. You can disable it, if you don't want to continue using it. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and when the list loads, on the left side, click on Add/Remove Windows components. Only click once. When that opens, find Windows Messenger and remove the checkmark. Click on Apply, or OK, and close Control Panel.
