Because people have a "herd mentality". If you give it a clever name, and market it properly, people will buy it.

If you call it "rare", people will pay more for it.

If you say that "everyone is getting one", people will pay even more for it.

And, most ridiculously of all, if you set a high price on something, people will automatically think that it *must* be worth it -- otherwise, why would you be charging so much??

Witness the Hummer -- why are they worth paying $50k+ for when they're basically just a chunkier Chevy Suburban? Because the ads tell us they are.

These dogs are still just mixed breeds, thousands of which die in shelters on a daily basis.
