Can anyone help me find a sad opera that would be appropriate for a father to sing to a dying child? It is for a production I am working on. Thanks.
Sad opera to a dying child?microsoft net frameworkA whole opera? All by himself? that would kill the kid for sure. Probably the father too, after a couple hours of singing all the parts.
The problem with opera is a) children don't die in them all that often b) when they do, it's usually the moher singing. But in Puccini's Madama Butterfly (Act II, p. 219 in the Schirmer vocal score), there's a little lullaby that Butterfly sings to her baby. The baby isn't dying; Butterfly does that, an act later. But it might work.

Sorry, not an opera, but the Pavane for a Dead Princess by Ravel. Best I could do.
Ravelinsky|||'Dead Boy's Poem' by Nightwish. Nightwish is a symphonic metal band, however most of their songs are part of the opera-genre.
It's really sad...you should listen to it =(
Here's the lyrics (in the beginning, it has the boy whispering words such as, "I'm Sorry...". I don't understand why they're not part of the lyrics, but meh):
