I'm writing a paper. My instructor wants one question answered specifically: why do we go to the opera? So I thought I'd ask: Why do You go to the opera?

Opera used to be what movies are today -- a way to dramatize stories and socially important issues through song. Knowing opera is important to knowing European cultural heritage, which of course is not for everyone.

But then again, I have no problem being a pretentious bastard if the alternative means forever wondering who's going to get kicked off of "Idol" this evening.

because we're pretentious bastards|||I go because I sing in it.|||Because the opera can not come to us.|||Because it is fun and more real to us then movies, which is basically the only other alternative for that sort of fun. We watch movies and go to the opera 'cuz we want to see and it is fun to see how people in life react to certain situations and things and maybe because we can forget easily when we do so.
