I would like a guideline to appreciate opera, besides going to one. And where would be a nice city to live that's full of classical music, etc? Are we to read about an opera before going? Is knowing the plot/understanding Italin necessary? Tell me what is prerequisite in appreciation of opera. And...don't forget to recommend some.. And oh, I want to know because others have loved opera and I never really had the knowledge to understand why.
thanks in advance.
Opera: how to appreciate?windows vistaA lot of American cities and European cities have Opera Houses that are still used. I mean, c'mon, even Detroit has one! As to understanding Italian, operas are in many languages including German and English. A famous English opera is Porgy and Bess. As to appreciating opera, I think you would have to kind of like listening to opera first before going to see an opera, as that can be quite pricey sometimes. I thing some of the most popular in the public concious include the operas of Wagner, including the famous Ring of Nibelungen Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen; based on Germanic/Norse myth) and Parsifal (about the Knight of the Roundtable and his quest for the Holy Grail). From the Ring cycle comes "The Ride of the Valkyries," sometimes one of the few pieces of classical music that most people today have actually heard. Also, the opera stereotype of an obese viking woman comes form this cycle of operas. Really, German opera is quite interesting as it has a little more grit than a lot of the Italian operas. Another famous opera composer was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, some of whose most famous operas include "The Magic Flute" (Die Zauberfl?te) and Don Giovanni (in Italian). Don GIovanni is widely regarded as one of THE greatest pieces of classical music ever-written and I've been told is an outstanding 1st opera as it is heavy on action, etc.
