Every bit as good - probably better. You can hear Caruso on record and, given the technology of his time - his voice is amazing. I am no expert, but have read that many of today's biggest opera singers become big because of recording contract promotion. For example, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has never really performed any of the truly great soprano roles - and yet her small - but astoundingly lovely voice sells recordings like crazy! She is a well known opera diva and yet has never performed Carmen, Norma,Brunnnhilde, etc. Knowing opera buffs though - you should get some passionate opinions on this question|||I don't know if they are better trained. The masters of the past certainly had it rough, (male sopranos losing their balls and all). As for being as huge a star today, I think there would be a few that would float into the mainstream but it would always be something you would have to learn to appriciate. I don't think just anyone would sit down and start listening to it and understanding it.|||I just wanted to clarify, in relation to the earlier post stating Kiri Te Kanawa had never sung any of the great soprano roles.... Carmen is not traditionally a soprano role. However, in the repetoire she is best suited for, Kiri has sung nearly everything from the Countess in Figaro, Fiordiligi (something like that) in Cosi, Arabella, The Marchellin, and many other Mozart and Strauss roles in addition to several Puccini roles.|||There isn't much of a debate here. Enrico Caruso was considered (still is by anyone affiliated with opera) as being one of the greatest tenors that ever lived. He was a pioneer within his genre of music. Arturo Toscanini ( the famous conductor) praised his work, and revered him to be one of the greatest artists that he personally worked with. If Caruso were alive today, he would be giving some of today's male opera singers a run for their money, be certain of it.
