It's an odd Catch-22 that although audiences would no longer accept park & bark productions, they nonetheless aren't dazzled when they encounter good acting and intelligent productions. In other words, they still think the music matters most, but don't want to merely be sung at. It's a bit perplexing.

And has become the case in other areas of society [particularly sports], there is a lot of pressure to become a world-class talent at an early age. In opera, the result is that a lot of phenomenal singers that I encountered early in my and their careers burned out because they were doing too much to become "established". So though a singer may have a lot of training, if they're in their early to mid 20s they still don't have the physical fortitude to be singing a major role 100 nights per year. I abandoned my full-force career efforts when I realized I couldn't fill the huge barn theatres in the U.S. -- my only recourse to have a major career would have been to work in Germany's houses [as did a lot of American artists], and that simply didn't appeal. Now I do supporting roles in lighter fare at large houses, principle roles at smaller houses, and have migrated into legit theatre and direction/conducting -- I'm not a major star, but I'm known and respected in both opera and other theatre genres, and can work as much or as little as I choose.
