I wanted to expand a developing interest in opera where is a good place to start?

Start with something light and fun like Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville); you'll probably recognize a lot of music from it. Then you can even follow the storyline by viewing Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) next. If you want something a little more emotionally involving, try Puccini's La Boheme...it's my favorite because it has many elements: comedy, romance and of course, tragedy.

I don't know if you've seen these because your question says "to expand a developing interest in opera." Like all performing arts, opera goes over best when viewed live. Many opera companies (even at the university level) provide pre-performance lectures about the opera they are about to present, so check those out, too!

Do you mean singing it or listening to it? If you mean singing it, I'd suggest voice lessons with a voice coach trained in opera, or if you're not singing already then just start with normal lessons. If you mean listening, I can suggest a few artists: Russell Watson, Andrea Bocelli, Cecilia Bartoli, Il Divo (ok, it's popera, but close enough), and Luciano Pavarotti are some of my favorites.|||Get the opera "La Boheme" and get a copy of the Italian/English words to go with it. Don't try to listen to it all in one night, start with just a scene at a time- like about 30 minutes, and by the end, you'll want to listen to the entire act 4. Follow it like a book, listening and reading. La Boheme is nice because it's one of the biggest operas, and just very popular. I played the entire opera for my high school students, having them follow along the lebretto (the italian/english words), and i actually had girls cry in the middle of it, in the middle of class, because they were so moved.|||If at all possible, attend an opera rather than just listen to a recording. Yes, the music is primary, but opera is all spectacle, after all. Nothing like sitting through AIDA with troops marching across stage, acrobatic dancers, stunning sets, etc. That's why so many film directors (Visconti, Zefferreli, Egoyan, etc.) have also staged operas. One of my great live performance experiences of any sort was CARMEN a few years ago with Houston Grand Opera. Carmen was no-nonsense and fiery, Don Jose was fairly psychotic, and there were more than a few "egghs" and "eeks" when Carmen smeared her bright red blood the length of the white wall outside the bullfight.
